What is your opinion?

What an inspiring message! The adage "as ye sow so shall ye reap" is abundantly clear with this message you've posted! In troubled times or good time, we should all be out there "spreading the wealth" (which one of the presidential candidates appears to think is a four letter word, but don't get me started LOL!). Great post Luanne!

I agree wholeheartedly that America needs to go on a diet. I have had a weight problem my whole life and find that you don't have to deprive yourself of your "favorites", one simply must use common sense. I'm thoroughly convinced that most Americans are eating themselves into an early grave!

Very good information about obesity and how it's such a big problem in America. It's just too bad that a lot of people are living a carefree lifestyle that will hurt them in the long run.

I think our society is too hooked on bad foods. No one really cares about it and obesity is going to get worse. People say they care but no one takes any action. It is the same with hunger. Everyone hears about it, but since it is not effecting them at the moment they just move on and stay in there little world. sad.

Thank you everyone for your great posts. Obesity is such a huge problem (no pun intended) but hunger is just as large. It's hard to believe that 33 Million Americans are at hunger risk right now when there is so much obesity.

Our Nutrient Dense Foods not only can help the obesity problem, but also the hunger problem.

I'd love to see the correlation of this with all the stuff that is now added to our food. I have a feeling that plays a role in this too.

Not only an excellent post, but each comment was delightful to read. Unfortunately, the subject matter, how obese we are, is no laughing matter. Currently here in Vegas there is a judge on trial herself and oh heavens! While I understand that some people are more prone to becoming overweight, there are now so many methods and medical resources available, I do not see why or how someone could choose not to try something!

Recently I saw one of those paid programs (it was late at night while I flipped around the Olympics). The person was plugging a product, but his underlying message... just start by eating 1/2 of what you're already eating! You don't even need to change what it is for starters, just eat 1/2, then 1/4, etc., etc.

When you look at how many people here and globally who exist on next to nothing (or nothing at all for that day, week, month), we're pigs. It's that simple :(

Sorry for the mini rant...

The thought that the majority, if not all of the US could be at least slightly overweight is amazing. This is a country full of junk food junkies and the fast food/convenience food industry certainly doesn't help. It's quicker, cheaper and easier to feed a family junk than it is to feed them a well banlanced, nutritious diet and people are taking the easy route.

Yes, we definately do live in a society of unhealthy choices. It seems that nearly our entire food economy is based on absolute crap. It is VERY difficult for me to feed my family with healthier choices. I recently ran some numbers at my grocery store and (hold on to your stomachs) I could save $150 per week on food for my husband and 4 children if I bought junkie stuff. Seriously - if only I packed their lunches with Cheetos and cheap pudding cups and refrigerated lunch pagages I could save a bundle. It makes me sick. I use every trick in the book - we have a freezer, I buy in bulk, and I shop for locally produced produce but the sad fact is that poverty leads to obesity and malnutrition simply because in the United States it is so much less expensive to buy junk food than it is to buy whole, less processed, organic, or local foods.

Obesity is an ever increasing problem among children as well. With Video games, computers and television many children aren't getting the "outdoor" excercise they did a generation ago.

If the US ever tried the social medicine thing, I hope they tax per BMI so people that aren't gluttons and are active aren't forced to pay for obesity-related health problems. If they want to eat more, it's a free world, just pay extra to cover the additional medical costs.

We live in a gluttonous society, one which consumes all, and thinks nothing of the consequences.

Heavy marketing of 'fat foods' certainly doesn't help matters.

I find a rigorous regime of exercise along with a healthy diet is ample for me to lose weight.

I thoroughly recommend the Royal Canadian Air Force - 5bx regime which was written in the 1950s. It is a worthy contender to combat weight loss.

It only takes 6 minutes a day of exercise, and I guarantee that you will lose weight.

Articles like that break my heart. I too am into feeding the hungry, and try to do a small part for the community by driving for Meals on Wheels once a week. Very different social problems we have here, but some are needing a meal all the same. Thanks for keeping us aware....

Wonderful blog!! I've been fighting against feeding kids crap for years. As a mother of 4, I know how vital it is that I provide proper nutrition for my children AND teach them how to make wise decisions about what they eat. Yesterday school started and I nearly fell off my chair when I read a request from my son's 4th grade teacher for CANDY to give as rewards (the really, really, really bad stuff too - she wants jumbo pixie sticks). It looks like I'm going to need to march in there and play the nightmare parent. This sort of thing should NOT be what our kids are being taught in school.

Hi Linda. I would love to share with you. I myself am a chocoholic so I love the chocolate pudding and shake.

You can see this great product if you go to my site at http://www.helpendhungerwithluanne.com

you will want to go to the right side of the site and opt in.

Once inside, you will see 2 tabs: nutri-pudding and nutri-shake. There's even info on the FAQ pages as well.

I would be more than happy to help you if you need it.

Here's a great testimony from my gal in New Zealand:

As a non-recovering chocoholic, I knew I'd love the chocolate pudding. What I didn't expect was falling...HARD...for the vanilla! I love to play around with it and make my own creations -- I add fruit, cinnamon, almonds, even vanilla extract for a little vanilla boost. On cold days, I use hot water and it tastes like warm pudding straight from the pot. Try it with fresh strawberries -- it is just amazing. When my kids eat ice cream, I eat my pudding and I don't feel deprived or like I'm missing out on anything. PLUS I've already lost 5 pounds...just eatin' pudding that I would eat anyway. And helping the hungry at the same time is an incredible bonus. I am totally, completely addicted. Thank you!

Lisa C Auckland, New Zealand

Hope this helps.

p.s. If you wish to want to try our product, I can help you with that as well. And the best part is, you will be helping feed the hungry just by trying the product.

Talk soon

Thank you for bringing your organization to my attention. I am the CIO of YOBI, and would be honored if you would create a charity/humanitarian profile for your organization on our Gives page. I would also be honored if you would participate in our United Nations discussion forums. You clearly have many important things to say that the world needs to hear.

Hi Linda. Thanks for your post. Even the little things like a phone call or short visit would brighten up their day.

Sometimes it's the little things we do just because we want to, that make the most impact.

Talk to you soon.

Hi gang!

WoW! such admirable goals from my neighbors! My hat is off to you all! Right now, I am being selfish and trying to get my rv covered... almost there but I have been helping the elderly around this little area. They need just a little help, visits, and telephone calls just to break up their day. Sometimes, the timing is absolutely horrible but hey, a little time for them is nothing! So I do not set goals, they are sometimes set for me and I just check them off a list, just like brad. Have a great evening!

Hey Luanne!

Looking forward to hearing your strategies for reducing world hunger.

I think we've gone and shot ourselves in the foot here in the U.S. now that we're sucking up so much of our corn to make fuel. Backfire!

I'm supporting www.AmericanSolutions.com which I believe will help in the long run.

See you in Boardman Country!

Hey Luanne! And Theresa!

Now that we're all neighbors here at WHB, I'm, of course, following the community posts at a minimum. Atleast, that's my GOAL!

Relative to goal setting, I've been self-employed for many years now and have made Luanne's discovery: I set goals all the time without actually calling them "goals."

Everyday when I make my To Do list in my daytimer I'm actually setting goals. In fact, I'm such a list maker that (and I'm turning red admitting this!) I'll even go back during the day and write something else down on the list - even though I've already done it! - just so I can cross it off the list! LOL! Wow! True confessions.

So I know that I do set goals, but it drives me crazy when I go to this or that seminar and there some authority is TELLING me that I NEED to set goals!

This rant is obviously going to get too long for just a comment, so I guess I'll have to get into this in Boardman Country. Come on by sometime and we'll get into it further!

I certainly admire your passion for the hungry...kids especially. You go girls!

I think we all tend to drag our feet sometimes, unsure of the unknown; only realizing there was nothing to be afraid of :-)

I agree with your last statement. Anyone can achieve what they want. Sometimes they just don't know their own potential... yet!

Thanks Luanne! But my confession is that I dragged my feet for quite a while - telling myself I was "too busy" or "not financially yet ready to help."

Turns out it was a piece of cake to choose a child and get signed up. The money is just donated painlessly each month for me. And so what... I miss a few hundred calories by giving up a pizza or two?!

It's a real eye opener when you find out how very little most people are surviving on! I am not a rich person, but god willing our income is more than that family "gets by" on!

I'm a firm believer that at a grass roots level people can achieve ANYTHING! :)

Hi Theresa. I think what you are doing is wonderful. I think we take things for granted because of where we live. There is so much poverty and hunger in this world. And especially here in North America. Hard to believe I know.

This world could use more people like you!

I set a goal and finally acted (achieved) it a while back. I made it a point that when I reach (another goal) I would "adopt" a child through the Save the Children foundation. I make a horrible pen pal, she's only 4 and doesn't write but her sister does off and on, but faithfully my money arrives to help feed her and her family.

The shocking part was when I learned that the entire family lived on less than $40 a MONTH! The $27 sent via Save The Children is just about their full month's expectation in income. She lives in the Phillipines.

I admire you focusing much closer to home - Americans at risk. I think we (Americans) tend to think outside our borders when it comes to this huge disaster. Changing the world starts where we live and I admire your goal!

Can't wait to see where you take your blog!
